The Empire Struck My Inspiration

Hello my name is Mike and this will be my first blog entry. I'd like to spend my first blog post discussing the movies that got my interested in film making, Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back . I remember the day I first saw a this film. It was a boring Sunday afternoon and I had nothing to do. I had just completed my newest Jumpstart game and was now looking for something to do. It was late in the afternoon so as it was a school night and I was in elementary school there was no time to go over to a friend's house to hang out. My dad who spends his free time watching movies invited me to sit down with him. He said to me "This movie that is about to come on defined a generation." I had watched movies with him a lot in the past but this movie would really show me what someone could do with film.

Shortly after commercials ended I heard that memorable intro song to all the Star Wars films as text began to roll up the screen. Within a minute I began seeing things that blew my mind. Giant space ships, laser swords, giant robots, epic action and combat sequences. Never before had I'd seen things like this before, and it wasn't even animated (in the sense that the film was an animation). I watched in awe as my dad explained everything I needed to know from A New Hope. The movie gripped me as I was unable to leave the room even during commercials up until the ending dramatics including the always memorable line "I am your father!"

After watching that film I something in me began to stir. I had already thought about becoming a writer when I grew up to tell my own stories but this, this was a way to show people the worlds and stories I imagined. I saw what one man's vision and idea could become and I wanted to do the same exact thing. From then on I started watching all the movies I could and I made sure the catch the final Star Wars movie on it's opening day, since the series is what inspired me to do this. And it also brought me closer to my father because now we sit down to watch movies all the time and we even have traditions such as our Christmas tradition to watch It's A Wonderful Life every year on Christmas Eve when it airs. So I think I will wrap up this blog post with a quote from George Lucas himself. He once said "Everybody has talent, it's just a matter of moving around until you've discovered what it is."
